The Laments of the Soul: Thirty-two prose poems

Overview

"As with so much of Peter Hague's poetic writings, 'The Laments of the Soul' includes many semi-autobiographical references as he does what he does best, and draws the world around his own experience, which is considerable and spans many decades. He then talks with it and listens and obtains something approximating truth, beautifully delivered in an entertaining and accessible way. There is no attempt to define a political stance or viewpoint, though Hague plays along with doctrines and politics, while considering them to be both a decadent betrayal and mostly unworthy of intellectual thought. ""This experimental work of prose poetry has me seeking a new range of poetic expression: one that crosses the familiarity of truncated lines to find a different way of controlling the words, and although it may seem at first that these poems are more verbose than my usual style, this is not actually true; there were many edits of beautiful lines that were disregarded in favour of better flow and concise story telling. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome."" PH"

Reviews

"""Bold Prose I have read many books of poetry by the author, and I always enter a deep intellectual contemplation as I read his poetry. The Laments of the Soul"" is the author's first endeavor into writing prose poetry, and his gorgeous poetic imagery and phrases flow through each thought-provoking piece. I am sitting at a dinner table observing him talk and expound and explore the edges of his life and its relation to society, roots, and patriarchy. As the listener and observer, I don't want to ask questions or interrupt his flow of words, but rather I want to see where he is going next with the topic flow. Absolutely Fascinating. This is an author/poet that catches me by surprise when I don't expect it-and that is usually with a short, gorgeous cadence of poetic imagery embedded within the prose. Peter Hague uses the canvas of his writing to find his place and perhaps, where he got lost? While this is not maudlin writing, there is a deep mourning quality that expresses outrage, curiosity, contempt, disbelief, and an insatiable quality of questing. This questing is to find meaning and reflection in the laments of his soul."" Wendy E Slater (poet)"

Author Information

Peter Hague has written most of his life and always returned to it, like it was some sort of duty - a way of explaining the world - or testing it. His various books of poetry, including 'Summer With The Gods', 'Louder Prayers' and 'The Momentary Clock' all display a landmark development of his talent - one defined in a period of re-invention which began to take place around 2016. Also available are 'Gain of Function', which is a collection produced during the febrile atmosphere of the pandemic, and 'Hope in the Heart of Hatred': a 'bridge' between his earlier work and the work he is doing now, such as 'The Laments of the Soul'. A number of other books are in production, encompassing both his exciting current work and a revival of his early output, stretching back to the nineteen-seventies. He has finally decided to concentrate his remaining years in becoming a lasting voice in the pageant of poetry.
