Overview

What secrets hide beneath the veil? When her mother departs for a tour of the continent, Georgina is sent from the rural backwaters to stay with her cousin, George Talbot, in London. The 1835 season is at its height, but Georgina is determined to attend neither balls nor plays, and to eschew Society. She hides her face beneath an impenetrable veil. Her extraordinary appearance only sets off gossip and speculation as to her identity. Who is the mysterious lady beneath the veil? Amory Balfour attracts the same kind of unwelcome attention. The son of slaves, adopted and educated by a wealthy white couple, he is now a prosperous businessman, respected by his peers but still distrusted because of the colour of his skin. Can Georgina and Amory help each other to overcome the stigma of being different? The Lady in the Veil continues the story of the Talbots in The House in the Hollow, but stands equally well alone.

Reviews

I read this book with the mind of a person of colour and as a regular reader. Allie Cresswell portrays the mindsets, and the challenges faced by her diverse characters with great authenticity. Zainab, Trustee, Anti Racist Cumbria. Allie Cresswell's descriptions of Georgian society are rich and evocative and reminiscent of Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair'. A poignant and captivating tale. This book is astonishing... from the very first page I thought I had inadvertently entered into a Jane Austen novel, and had to check the cover just to be sure I had not! Cresswell paints a convincing picture of 19th century London: the excess of high society life, the impact of new technologies such as steamship travel, the influence of empire, the opportunism of a newly emerging merchant class; yet she does not shy away from depicting the contrast between the wealth of the elite with the abject poverty of the working classes, the beauty of fine houses and manicured parks with the muck and squalor of the less fortunate. One secret is uncovered just as the suspense was about to become unbearable, but the big reveal, at the very end of the book, will leave you gasping with surprise.
