The Kite Flyer...and more A collection of haiku and haiga

Overview

This hardcover volume of illustrated haiku poems captures moments etched in the author's memory during her life in India and in her homeland of the UK. Haiku celebrates the romance of the subtle, and in this volume, never to be forgotten moments recorded in the genre's three-line form include gulls soaring in stormy skies, the dreamy moment before a child falls asleep, a story in the clouds, the calls of flying geese, memories of the sacred, and light scattered through falling leaves.

Author Information

Girija was a lead actress in South Indian films from the age of 17. She won numerous awards and is well known for two perennially popular films: Geetanjali (1989, dir. Mani Ratnam) and Vandanam (1989, dir. Priyadarshan). Her citations include: Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (eds. Ashish Rajadhyaksha & Paul Willemen) and the inclusion of Geetanjali in the British Film Institute's 2002's Mani Ratnam retrospective on strong female leads. She left films to pursue academic studies and yoga. Working as a senior business journalist in London for 14 years, she became a meditation facilitator in 2023, building on 30 years of practice and supported intellectually by post-graduate studies in psychology and Indian philosophy, including a PhD in the integral yoga philosophy of Sri Aurobindo. Girija's latest film in which she features in a special role is Ibbani Tabbida Ileyali ('Dewdrops, Sunshine and a Blade of Grass'). The film was released by Paramvah Studios in September 2024 and is available on Amazon Prime. Senje has worked as a creative director for a number of global advertising agencies, including Arnold UK, Bartle Bogle Hegarty London, Doyle Dane Bernbach UK, Campbell Doyle Dye, Greys Advertising, Havas Worldwide London, Ogilvy & Mather and Wieden & Kennedy London. He has produced advertising campaigns for household brands and his work has featured on television, radio, poster, press and online advertising. Senje is an Awarded Member of D&AD (Design and Art Direction, formerly known as British Design and Art Direction), the world's foremost creative awards. Senje is also a student of law. When he is not conceptualising for clients, he enjoys nothing more than dreaming, drawing, and illustrating. His dreams occasionally materialise into ideas such as the illustrations in this book and he truly hopes that you enjoy his latest drawings in The Kite Flyer...and more. Diana Webb's haiku, written since the early 1990s, have been widely published and recognised. Diana has won first prize in the Genjuan International Haibun contest and first prize in the haibun section of the British Haiku Society (BHS) Awards. Two separate haiku, published in BHS journal Blithe Spirit, were celebrated by the Museum of Haiku Literature Award. Her three most recent collections, including haiku, haibun and haibun novellarettes, are White Coat on a Peg, Fragile Horizons, and A Glimpse of the Gate, all published by Magic Pen Press. Diana edits the print journal Time Haiku and organises a haiku group in Leatherhead, Surrey (UK) where she lives. She derives special inspiration from the natural world and from all varieties of expression through the creative arts.
