This memoir records, in great detail, Gary Slaughter's life of work during the 40 years before he met his wife, Joanne, and the story of their business lives together over the past 40 years. Gary's life of work included a wide variety of careers, jobs, sports, and hobbies that he mastered during the eight decades of his life. Using his award-winning, story-telling ability, he describes his life of work beginning with his first entrepreneurial endeavor as a six-year-old egg merchandizer on his grandparents' farm. Gary's junior-high school career as a bait-supplier netted money to pay for 11/2 years of college. Odd jobs throughout high school increased the fund. Honing his business acumen through his college years at the University of Michigan, he traces his Naval career, highly successful information-technology businesses, and finally his decades-long career as an award-winning novelist.

Gary Slaughter was born and raised in Owosso, Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he served seven years, during the Cold War, as a Naval officer, principally on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) destroyers. Following a distinguished military career, he became an expert on managing corporate information technology and consulted to clients world-wide. In 2002, he put his career on hold and began to write the award-winning Cottonwood series of five novels, depicting life on the American home front during the last five seasons of World War II. In 2016, his critically-acclaimed memoir, Sea Stories, was published. The book's 60 vignettes recall Gary's life in the Navy. One vignette tells of the once top-secret role he played in avoiding an all-out nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
