Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationSigmund Freud (18561939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. Born in Freiberg, Moravia, he spent most of his life living and working in Vienna. Freud developed revolutionary, though deeply controversial, theories concerning the unconscious mind, infantile sexuality, defense mechanisms, and the tripartite structure of the psyche consisting of the id, ego, and superego. His publication of The Interpretation of Dreams in late 1899 laid the foundational groundwork for psychoanalytic theory and permanently altered modern understandings of human psychology, culture, and literature.
