Overview

The Indian Ocean: Fundamentals of Marine Geology, Physics and Chemistry covers the origin of water and formation of oceans on Earth and the history of oceanography/marine sciences, including international and Indian scenarios, marine instruments, sampling equipment, coastal features, and offshore and deep-sea features and structures. In addition, oceanic volcanism and the formation of different rocks and geotectonics (continental drift, plate tectonics, seafloor spreading) are also detailed. Chapters discuss sediments of the coasts and deep sea in terms of their classifications, granulometry, chemical compositions, the biology of the oceans, and their importance to sediment formation and paleoceanography. Other chapters discuss the mineral wealth of the coasts (near- and off-shore), including sections on beach sands, placer deposits, polymetallic nodules, phosphorites and hydrothermal polymetallic sulphides. In addition, the economics of mining these deposits are covered, along with information related to harnessing various energies from the sea, such as from tides, waves, currents and winds.

Author Information

Sridhar D Iyer has investigated the volcanics and morphotectonics of the mid-ocean ridges and seamounts. The study provided better understanding about the geomorphology of the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) and the characteristics and origin of the volcanics and their relationship with the ferromanganese deposits. He is presently working on the challenging aspects of coastal mineral resources. He has received the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research's (New Delhi, India) Young Scientist Award (1994) and the CSIR Raman Research Fellowship (1996). He has more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed and reputed journals and has also co-authored a book on the ferromanganese deposits of the CIOB. Sridhar D Iyer has a doctoral degree in Marine Geology and is a Professor and Chief Scientist with CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography, Goa India. He has 35 years of research experience in Marine Geology and his fields of interest are deep sea geomorphology, structures, volcanism and resources especially polymetallic nodules and hydrothermal minerals. In the last decade and half he has carried out investigations related to the Indian coasts with emphasis on coastal geology, petrology and placer minerals. He has participated in a number of oceanographic expeditions and enjoys carrying out coastal field works. Several students and project assistants were guided and mentored by him for their Master's dissertations and doctoral thesis. He has co-authored 2 books, published more than 80 research papers and is a reviewer for several journals. He was India's corresponding member for InterRidge and was a recipient of the CSIR-Young Scientist award and Raman Research Fellowship. Victor J Loveson, is a Marine Geologist working as Chief Scientist in CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa India. Over 30 years of research experience, he specialized in coastal geosciences especially in Quaternary sea levels, placers, coastal zone management, geomatics, paleo-extreme events, and marine archaeology. Conferred with the ISCA-Young Scientist Award and CSIR-Golden Jubilee-Whittaker Young Scientist Award. On the INSA-The Royal Society (UK) Exchange Fellowship, he worked at Kingston University, London, UK on paleo-climate during Holocene. Coordinated many multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional geo-science projects and involved in IGCP projects (274, 264, 256 and 514). He has 52 research papers, 17 book chapters, 4 software and 3 edited books on coastal placer research. Guided many Doctoral and Masters Theses. He was the Secretary, Indian Ocean Sub-Commission, INQUA during 1999-2003 and associating with many National and International Scientific Societies. He visited UK, Scotland, Brazil, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia for scientific collaborations. Dr. S. Prasanna Kumar is presently CSIR-Emeritus Scientist at National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, India and Visiting Professor at the University of Hyderabad, India and Maritime University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was acting director of CSIR-NIO and Professor at School of Oceanography, Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, Goa. He has more than 35 years of experience in carrying out multi-disciplinary, national and International projects for studying the Indian Ocean and Arctic Fjords. He has obtained B.Sc in Physics from University of Kerala in 1978, M.Sc and PhD in Physical Oceanography from Cochin University of Science and Technology in 1980 and1987 respectively. While doing his Ph. D, he joined as Scientist at NIO, Goa in 1982. He has received the INSA-Royal Society Fellowship for the year 1995 and Science and Technology Agency Fellowship of Japanese Government in 1997, guided 5 PhDs and has 78 publications in national and international peer reviewed journals. Dr. V.V.S.S. Sarma is presently Senior Principal Scientist at National Institute of Oceanography, Regional Centre, Visakhapatnam, India and Professor at AcSIR (Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research). He has more than 25 years of experience in carrying out multi-disciplinary research for studyingthe Indian and Pacific Oceans. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in France for 2 years and research Scientist and visiting professor at Japan for 7 years. He is a fellow of Indian Academy of Science. His research interests include Biogeochemistry of Indian Ocean, long-terms trends in trace gases emissions, influence of extreme events on biogeochemistry and Land-Ocean-Atmospheric interactions and their influence on ecosytem. Presently he is involved in understanding the human-interference on biogeochemistry of Indian Ocean and response to Climate change.
