Overview

Tinnitus is a subjective disorder occurring in the ears in the absence of environmental noise in the form of ringing, roaring, buzzing, humming or hissing (American Tinnitus Association, 2002). The World Health Organization (2004) has warned that hearing-related diseases including tinnitus will be one of the ten most prevalent disease categories in the near future. Various physical and psychological reactions have been noted in tinnitus sufferers. The present study was undertaken with five objectives: 1) To develop and validate a Psychosocial variable questionnaire; to translate the questionnaire into Bangla language for persons with hearing loss and tinnitus. 2) To transadapt the standardized Quality of Life questionnaire (SF-36) into Bangla language for persons with hearing loss and tinnitus. 3) To compare the quality of life of persons having hearing loss with tinnitus with those having similar hearing loss without tinnitus (control vs experimental group). 4) To compare the scores of psycho-social variables, quality of life, and severity of tinnitus (TSI, THI, Psychoacoustic measurement) within the 4 experimental groups following the four treatment protocols. 5) To compare the effectiveness of the selected tinnitus management protocols for the experimental groups, based on the scores obtained for psycho-social variables, quality of life, and severity of tinnitus (TSI, THI, and Psychoacoustic measurement) between the 4 experimental groups following the various treatment protocols.
