Overview

In origin the knight was a mounted warrior, the name in German, Spanish and French meant 'horseman', and the knight of the Middle Ages had a relationship of almost religious intensity with not only his horse, but also his weapons. However, the knights who rode as 'soldiers of Christ' to the Holy Land on crusade, and those who jousted in the lists were more than mounted warriors. They certainly honoured bravery and courage, and were renowned for their prowess in battle, but they also aspired to a range of qualities outside the military - Christian faith, courtesy, generosity, loyalty and moderation - that were connected to a world of social and religious obligation. Charles Phillips is the author of The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Aztec & Maya, The Complete Illustrated Guide to Kings and Queens of Britain and Ireland and The Complete Illustrated Guide to Castles, Palaces and Stately Houses of Britain and Ireland (all Lorenz Books). He contributed to Cassell's Dictionary of Modern Britain and Ancient Civilizations. He graduated from Oxford University and holds an MA from the University of Westminster, London. Dr Craig Taylor is a lecturer in Medieval History, and a Fellow of both the Societe de l'Histoire de France and the Royal Historical Society. His specialization is political thought and public discourse in late medieval France and England, chivalry and the Hundred Years War.
