OverviewThe Government of the Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh enacted International Criminal Tribunal Act in 1973 to establish court to try the perpetrators war crimes, crimes against humanity and other crimes listed in the Act by the then President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Later under the Act, the Government of Sheikh Hasina established ICT to try the collaborators and perpetrators of Crimes against Humanity during the liberation war of 1971. In this court, political opponents of Sheikh Hasina has been tried illegally and judicial killing has been perpetrated at broad day light. During the July Revolution Dictator Sheikh Hasina killed more than 1400 people including children, women and elderly people. During the uprising more than 20 thousand people have been injured. Lethal weapons have been used. An investigation has been run by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on request of the Government of Bangladesh. The report has been published in February 2025 and publicly available. Also there are other internationally accepted reports published by rights organizations like Odhikar, Human Rights Watch, etc., print and electronic media, recorded audio-video & pictures by many protesters and general citizen, and witnesses of the martyrs and injured persons. The present court, the ICT, has been reshuffled with broader review which includes the Act's alignment with the Rome Statute, the Convention on the Enforced Disappearances, arranging the Court proceedings to broadcasted over Television channel, opportunity foreign lawyers for the accused persons, etc. After a long trial, the ICT has verdict on the Case against Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity on 18 November 2025.
