Overview

This 1922 book was an important work in the history of psychology and psychoanalysis showing how this science, while contributing to the growth of human understanding, also has blocked understanding and human growth. Stekel was a follower of Sigmund Freud, though Freud was not particularly enamored with him. In the present volume Stekel studies the psychical causes of homosexuality - its relations to neurosis, narcissism, repression and creativity. He writes in the first chapter, Our investigations thus far have repeatedly shown us that in the case of homosexuals the heterosexual path is merely blocked I have proven that the individual, as representative of our modern culture, find it impossible to maintain his bisexuality; therefore he represses either his homosexuality or his heterosexuality. In this fascinating psychoanalytic examination of homosexuality, Stekel addresses all aspects of homosexuality, including organic causes, and reveals his differences with Hirschfeld. Stekel also considers artists as neurotics and investigates the prevalence of homosexuality among artists. Topics include: Fear of the Sexual Partner; Disgust for Woman; Jealousy of the Father; Why Women Abuse Servant Girls; Dreams of Urinals; A Spermatozoan Dream; Homosexuality among the Greeks; and much more.
