Overview

Note: This HTP Guidebook is for Self-help or to Support Individual Therapy - There is a separate HTP Guidebook for Group Therapy. The Historical Trauma Programme (HTP) is a comprehensive and science-based model of help created for adults who experienced childhood abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The HTP is unique in that it developed over more than 10 years of close collaboration between dozens of NHS therapists and several hundred clients. This partnership has resulted in a powerful programme of recovery which combines the best ideas and strategies from trauma studies, clinician experience, and (importantly) the 'voices' of many who experienced childhood trauma. Designed for engagement and inclusion, the Guidebook is written in a highly accessible style and is supported by a free audio version, the HTP Community Website, and HTP YouTube Channel (see below). This version of the Guidebook can be used as self-help for those who have the necessary social support and stability. Or, it can be used alongside individual therapy for those who will find this a better approach. If you are unsure whether self-help or individual therapy is going to be best for you, there is more information near the beginning of the Guidebook that can help you make this decision. In either event, the Guidebook will support you with: Developing any necessary safety and stability Learning a great deal about childhood harm, both in a general and very personal manner Safely exploring your childhood with a view to building insight, integrating experiences, and developing confidence to think and talk about the past on your terms Exploring core needs and developing clarity on what recovery means for you Working with the most helpful ideas and strategies to support trauma healing and living life less constrained by childhood events. This typically includes developing a stronger relationship to yourself and healthier relationships to others, as well as overcoming the common impacts of complex trauma, including emotional and attentional difficulties, body-based distress, traumatic memories, traumatic core beliefs, and more. The HTP Community Website and HTP YouTube Channel provide additional support and resources to compliment your work with the HTP Guidebook (see links below). A free audio version of the Guidebook is also available for download from the HTP website or can be live-streamed from our YouTube channel. While you will still need to use the print version alongside the audio to be able to engage with exercises, checklists, etc... many clients have used the audio and print version together with good results.
