His father, of the fame name, was aman of goodel'tate and reputa tion, and, in the time ofthe commonwealth, fer; ved in Iome of the highet't maritime offices, as thofe of rear-admiral, vice-admiral, admiral of Ireland, vice-admiral of England, &c. In all which he acquitted himfelf with honour and fide liry. After the refioration, he was knighted by King Charles the, Second, and became a peculiar favourite of the then Duke of York: his father's care, andapromifingprofpe' t of his fon's advance ment, induced him to gtve him a liberal educa tion; and the youth, of an excellent genius, made fuch early improvements in literature, that about the 15th year of his age, he was entered a fiudent at Chrifi's Church College in Oxford.
