Overview

This history of the Harbour View cottage community in Nova Scotia started as the author's recollections of his many years in that special place. It grew and evolved, reaching back into prehistory to survey how the area around the Annapolis Basin came to be, and forward to provide portraits of the Harbour View Inn in its several evolutions, and of each of the cottages and cottage families that give the community its special flavour and charm.

Author Information

Charles Turnbull was a lifelong summer resident of Harbour View, his lanky frame and friendly demeanor a fixture in the life of the community for decades. He treasured and maintained Sunnymeade, the cottage that his grandmother built in 1928, and always took keen interest in the people and activities of the community, from the days of his boyhood and beyond. It is thanks to the combination of his habits of acute observation, his remarkable memory and his desire to keep the history of this special place alive that this book exists. Charles was born in 1923, the oldest son of an American mother and a Canadian father descended from a forebear who settled in Digby in 1786. He was raised in New Jersey and went to McDonogh School and Wesleyan University. He spent his adult years in New Jersey and Connecticut with his wife, Priscilla, where they raised three children. His career was in engineering, but, in keeping with his interest in many other pursuits, he was highly productive as an artist and an author, having published seven books and two essays. He died in 2016.
