a beautiful publication, packed full of interesting facts, great illustrations and fabulous photographs. I would loved to have had such a book (and a big hardback at that) when I was growing up, but I must admit that even now I have learned more than a few things I didn't know! ... excellent publication -- Kate McAney of The Vincent Wildlife Trust

far from being a spotter's guide to Irish nature, it is a celebration of its wonders, providing an introduction to a vast topic and hopefully inspiring further exploration -- Evening Echo a beautiful publication, packed full of interesting facts, great illustrations and fabulous photographs. I would loved to have had such a book (and a big hardback at that) when I was growing up, but I must admit that even now I have learned more than a few things I didn't know! ... excellent publication -- Kate McAney of The Vincent Wildlife Trust beautifully illustrated book ... outstanding illustrations by Barry Reynolds, and a really attractive, easy-to-follow layout ... overflowing with stunning photographs and engaging, child-friendly cartoons accompanied by clear accessible text ... perfect to encourage children to discover their local wildlife, and a lovely gift -- Parents in Touch your little ones will be so intrigued about Irish wildlife after they have turned the final page, that they won't be able to wait until spring to experience it the magic of the great outdoors -- Irish Country Magazine As the trees begin to shed their leaves, there is no better way to chart the changing seasons than with a beautiful book ... The book reads like a diary of the seasons, drawing a connection between animals, their environment and the climate shifts that mark the passing of time. Browne directs the young reader's attention to changes they can spot themselves, in their garden, local park, forest or beach, and the text is accessible, both in content and in form. There are practical tips for helping animals make the most of their habitats, as well as reminders of what animals and environments are best left alone. Barry Reynolds's illustrations are intermixed with documentary photographs that reinforce the amazing wildlife all around us, even in urban environments, and the role that children can play in ensuring they thrive. -- Irish Times

Author Information

Juanita Browne, a Zoology graduate with an MA in Media Studies, has almost 20 years’ experience across television, radio, magazines, books, and newspapers. She works on natural history documentaries for television, including the multi-award-winning ‘Secret Life of the Shannon’ and ‘On a River in Ireland’, ‘Wild Cities’ and ‘Wild Ireland’. She has also worked on children’s wildlife television shows for RTE, including ‘Shutterbugs’ and ‘Wild Things.’ Juanita has produced two radio documentary series for RTE Radio 1, titled ‘Nature on One’, consisting of 16 half-hour documentaries. Juanita’s books include ‘Ireland’s Mammals’ (2005); ‘Kildare’s Natural Heritage’ (2008), ‘Put the Kettle On – the Irish love affair with tea’ (2013); and ‘My First Book of Irish Animals’ (2014), which was shortlisted for the Literacy Association of Ireland Children’s Book Award 2015. Juanita also edits Biodiversity Ireland, the magazine of the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Her latest job involves working with the National Biodiversity Data Centre, on a project called the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan – conserving bees, bumblebees and the wildflowers, hedgerows they depend on. Dubliner Barry Reynolds is a character designer/concept/visual development artist and illustrator who has worked on the Oscar-nominated, animated movie The Secret of Kells, on Aardman and Sony Pictures Animation’s Arthur Christmas, and on Irish language graphic novels, An Táin and Deirdre agus Mic Uisnigh, where his artwork helped these Irish legends to a new readership. As a child, Barry saw The Jungle Book and announced then that he intended to be an artist, and he has realised that dream, apart from a few brief flirtations with wanting to be an astronaut, a dinosaur hunter and a zoologist … the last of which came in handy when working on The Great Big Book of Irish Wildlife.
