OverviewThe Grand Lady of Mount Baker was one of the magnificent lodges built in the early 1900's in the American West. The Grand Lady was located in the northwest corner of Washington State near the city of Bellingham. The Lodge opened in July of 1927 and was destroyed by fire in August of 1931. Started in 1923, well in advance of the highway construction that brought the road in 1926, the development and construction at the site was an unbelievable task. The location is situated high in the Cascade Mountains, and the snow can start to fall in September and does not melt out until the latter part of June or early July. Not only was the construction of the main Lodge an unsurmountable task, a concrete dam and power generating plant and all other utilities were required in a virgin area. To be found in this book are over 100 old and new pictures, many historical documents, and over four years of research.
