Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationTrained as a theoretical physicist in the schools of Heisenberg and Pauli, Jagdish Mehra is a distinguished historian of modern physics. His major work (with Helmut Rechenberg) is The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, 1900-1941, with an Epilogue, 1942-1999 (six volumes, nine books, Springer-Verlag, New York). In 1994 Professor Mehra published The Beat of a Different Drum: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman (Oxford University Press), and later he published (with Kimball A Milton) a companion volume, Climbing the Mountain: The Scientific Biography of Julian Schwinger (Oxford, 2000). With Arthur Wightman of Princeton University, he has coedited The Collected Works of Eugene Paul Wigner (eight volumes, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1992-2000), and he has also published Einstein, Physics and Reality (World Scientific, 1999). Professor Jagdish Mehra has held prestigious academic appointments in Europe and the USA, including the Swiss National Science Foundation Professorship at the University of Geneva, the UNESCO-Sir Julian Huxley Distinguished Professorship of Physics and the History of Science in Trieste, Italy, and Paris, France, and the Regents' Professorship at the University of California. He lives in Houston, Texas, USA, where - for a long time - he has been associated with the University of Houston, which now houses The Jagdish Mehra Collection, a vast archive of books, monographs, tapes of interviews and their transcripts, manuscripts, photographs, and scientific correspondence, which Professor Mehra donated to it.
