Excerpt from The Genesee Farmer, 1864, Vol. 25: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Agriculture and Horticulture, Domestic and Rural Economy; Illustrated With Numerous Engravings of Domestic Animals, Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Implements, Shrubs, Flowers, &C With his wagon and team the farmer carried his surplus wheat crop, at one load, ninety miles, at a season when the waters of the Ohio river were too low to permit shipments; and when the yellow fever at New Orleans had stopped all commerce at that city. The markets were without the least anima tion, and the usual Louisville prices were from 40 to 50 cents a bushel. If our farmers returned ho'me with as much sugar and coffee as would supply the economical wants of their families, they accomplished all that they expected by their surplus crops of wheat. Of what avail would a larger crop have been? They. Therefore directed their attention to the raising of corn, feeding it to hogs and cattle, which carried themselves to market, even when corn production was ruinous to their soils.
