'This is a valuable read for anyone having an interest in the tank, the evolution of Allied tactics in the Great War, or the history of the French Army.' New York Military Affairs Symposium Review '... this is a well-researched, very readable, and highly informative account of the development and use of tanks by the French during the Great War. ... it demands a place on the bookshelf of anyone with an interest in either the development of tanks or of the French Army.' Niall Ferguson, Stand To! The Western Front Association 'There are very few books in the English language about the French war effort, and none that I know of covering the Artillerie Speciale, as the French called their tank force, certainly not in the depth of this volume. ...it demands a place on the bookshelf of anyone with an interest in either the development of tanks or of the French Army.' Author Information

Dr Tim Gale undertook his doctoral research on the French tank service (the Artillerie Speciale) at the Department of War Studies, King's College, under the supervision of Professor William Philpott. His interests continue to be the Artillerie Speciale and other aspects of French Army in the Great War. His current research is on the wartime career of one of France's most controversial generals, Charles Mangin. He is a member of the First World War Tactics and Operations Group (KCL) and is the Honorary Treasurer of the British Commission for Military History. Forthcoming work includes chapters on the development of French tank doctrine in the Great War, General Charles Mangin, General Estienne of the Artillerie Speciale, as well as one about the post-war life of the Renault light tank.
