Overview"The Fragile Scholar is a comparative study of the construction of masculinity. It examines the pre-modern construction of Chinese masculinity from the popular image of the fragile scholar (caizi) in late imperial Chinese fiction and drama. This is an original contribution to the study of the construction of masculinity in the Chinese context from a comparative perspective and a fascinating topic that has been little explored on the context of traditional Chinese literature. The book covers a variety of texts including drama, long narrative, poetry and classics, with the conceptual tools borrowed from Foucault to Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. The chapters present a sequence of arguments pointing to the conclusion that it is an apt time for China to re-examine its cultural heritage to rediscover itself in the face of the current western-dominated ""globalization"" by way of a dialogical reading as exemplified by this study."
