The Forces of Bay House: A Novel of Suspense

Overview

The Forces of Bay House is a gripping tale of tragedy and triumph, rescue and redemption, lost identity and the hope of inheritance. Abby Wells, 27, is on the run with her five-year-old son. It's 1965, and her violent marriage must end. Her cousin, William, offers shelter at historic Bay House, his secluded island home in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, the ""Land of Pleasant Living"". But is it always pleasant . . . is William her protector or predator? Is Abby the estate's rightful inheritor, as her father always promised? History, mystery, complex characters and spiraling plot twists sprawl under the spell of sea, sky and secrets, while a surprising new love blooms despite the obstacles. Ancient prejudice taints generations of one family while past lives still haunt the present. Who is the gentle apparition that appears only to five-year-old Benjie? Is she real, or merely born of the mystique of Bay House and the myths that surround it? And what is the strange bond they share? Legend, lies and danger stand between Abby and her journey to discover the truth. Will she have the courage too find it? And what must she risk to prove it? A wonderful story of hope and determination I loved reading this page-turner full of mystery, history, family and friendship. Set on Maryland's Eastern Shore, this book illustrates multiple dimensions of the human spirit and how connections to people and places drive our narratives. The authors seamlessly integrated descriptions of the area with intriguing characters and a riveting storyline. Once I started, I couldn't wait to see how everything unfolded!

Author Information

Susan Shipe Calfee was hooked on words with a rhyme published in second grade which kindled her interest in writing. She became a Speech Communications major at the University of Maryland, her home state. Susan lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where she joined the local Shantyboat Writer's Workshop, learning craft techniques and developing her skills. In 2013 she published her award-winning children's book, St. Augustine A to Z - A Young Reader's Guide to America's Oldest City. Still widely sold today, it's the subject of popular elementary school visits. Her second passion is singing. She enjoys membership in numerous vocal ensembles and plans to write and sing as long as she can hold a pencil and a piece of music. Hospital volunteering allowed her passions to merge. Work with Body & Soul - The Art of Healing, gave her the privilege of escorting musicians to patients' rooms for bedside serenades. The highlight of her service was chronicling the miraculous transformative power of music. As the newsletter editor she published those unforgettable stories. Childhood summers on and around the Chesapeake Bay planted a love and affinity for the region. In 2017 Susan began revisions and completions to The Forces of Bay House at her mother's request - the novel she could not finish before her death.Susan has two adventurous sons and is the grandmother of two little whirlwinds. She is proud to be among many authors in her family. This is her first novel. Bess Paterson Shipe (1919 - 2015) was a born writer with a collection of over 200 poems written from ages eight through twelve. One of them became the core of the novel she began 50 years later. A native of Baltimore, she graduated from the University of Maryland in 1940. She was a war bride, an English teacher and prolific author. She had a gift for stories portrayed in fluid, linear order with beautiful imagery and lyrical style. She and her husband lived in Potomac, Maryland, raising three daughters with grands and great grands they cherished. During her long life, Bess wrote in every genre possible. Country School Boy, 1976, Historic Medley District, Inc., tells about one room schoolhouses through the misadventures of a real-life rascally seven-year-old in 1875. The Mysterious Tail of a Charleston Cat, 1996, Sandlapper Publishing Co., Inc, reflects her flair for mystery and history. She was a dedicated researcher as displayed in one of her earlier articles, ""A House with a Past"", June 1980, Chesapeake Bay Magazine. In 1974 she began The Forces of Bay House and continued creating it up until her death. In 2014 at age 95 she moved to Florida to live with her daughter, Susan Calfee, also a writer. Unable to complete her novel she asked for Susan's help. So began their mother-daughter writing team, though sadly Bess passed away during the process. This intriguing novel of suspense was the result.
