Not illustrated. 1726 edition. Excerpt: ... keep on the Dressing; and lay the fame Desensative about the Crontt, and let it lie on for 3 days, keeping the Horse in a dry place. If the Fig be upon the hinder Foot, as it commonly is, the Excrements of the Horse must be taken away immediately, as often as he dungs, that it may not prejudice the Sole by any Moisture. When the Dressing is taken off, the Part must be carefully cleansed with dry Flax and a Slice, and then the Ointment apply'd with Bolsters, fye. as before directed; but then you need not a Desensative for th: Cronet. Two days after take off the Dressing, observe the Colour of the Flesh, and if it be foul, wash it with the second Water, and apply the Oimmcnr, with the addition of Aqua. fonts j forth; and where the Flesh is clean and fair, apply only the simple Ointment. Repeat this for some days. If the Horse lose his Appetite, tie a chewing Ball to the Bit, and give him good Clysters, and Sal Polychrestum and moisten'd Bran to eat. It the Fig is fasten'd to the Gristle, or Bone of the Foot, the surest way is to take out the Sole, as is directed in the Chapter of Harrow Heels, and then dress the Fig as before; and if there is occasion, you may either cut out the Gristle, or consume it with Causticks. But it is best never to apply a Caustick, where 'tis possible to perform the Operation with a Razor; because in using an Instrument, a Person may see what he does, and may direct and guide it as he pleases, which cannot be done so well with a Caustick; and besides, an Incision is not so painful as a Caustick: And even altho there is a Scale of a Bne in the Foot to be separated, a redhot Iron is better than a Caustick; and for the fame purpose he apply'd gyptiacum with Sugar or white Vitriol, or Borax powder'd, mix'd with Spirit...
