Overview

An escapee from a Spanish prison hunts for his best friend's killer in New York For more than a year, Kit McKittrick languishes in a Fascist prison, his days spent in darkness and his nights tortured by fear of his limping jailer, whose name he never learns. He escapes Spain with the help of Louie Lepetino, a childhood friend who came with him to fight on behalf of the Republican cause. Back in the United States, Kit heads out West to recover from his ordeal, while Louie returns to a life of caf├(R)s and cocktail parties in New York. But Kit's convalescence is cut short when he learns Louie has taken a fatal tumble out of a window, and he journeys to New York to discover who gave his savior the final push. Only a woman could have led Louie to his death, Kit thinks, and New York is full of femmes fatales. But man or woman, Louie's murderer should watch out for Kit. He wants vengeance, and he's willing to kill for it.

Author Information

Dorothy B. Hughes (1904-1993) was a mystery author, award-winning poet, and literary critic. She published fourteen novels, the best known of which are In a Lonely Place and Ride the Pink Horse. Both were made into successful films. Her work had a major influence on other mystery writers of the postwar era, and the movies they inspired remain among the most respected of their genre. She was especially influential on the next two generations of female mystery writers. In the early 1950s, she largely stopped writing fiction, preferring to focus on criticism. She reviewed mysteries for the Los Angeles Times, New York Herald Tribune, and other papers and earned an Edgar Award for Outstanding Mystery Criticism. In 1978 the Mystery Writers of America presented her with the Grand Master Award for literary achievement. Claire Bloom gained international fame in 1951 with her screen debut in Charles Chaplin's motion picture Limelight. Among her many memorable films are Richard III, The Haunting, Look Back in Anger, and A Doll's House. Stefan Rudnicki is an award winning audiobook narrator, director and producer. He was born in Poland and now resides in Studio City, California. He has narrated more than three hundred audiobooks and has participated in over a thousand as a writer, producer, or director. He is a recipient of multiple Audie Awards and AudioFile Earphones Awards as well as a Grammy Award, a Bram Stoker Award, and a Ray Bradbury Award. He received AudioFile's award for 2008 Best Voice in Science Fiction and Fantasy. Along with a cast of other narrators, Rudnicki has read a number of Orson Scott Card's best-selling science fiction novels. He worked extensively with many other science fiction authors, including David Weber and Ben Bova. In reviewing the twentieth anniversary edition audiobook of Card's Ender's Game, Publishers Weekly stated, Rudnicki, with his lulling, sonorous voice, does a fine job articulating Ender's inner struggle between the kind, peaceful boy he wants to be and the savage, violent actions he is frequently forced to take. Rudnicki is also a stage actor and director.
