The Europeanization of British Environmental Policy: A Departmental Perspective

Overview

Almost all aspects of modern politics have been deeply Europeanized, yet we know surprisingly little about how the EU affects the inner workings of national government. This book conceptualizes the profound Europeanization of British environmental government and policy both as a lagged response to European integration and as an important determinant of Britain's contribution to that process. By combining political theories of the EU with new empirical research, Andrew Jordan offers a fresh perspective on the evolution of modern European governance.

Reviews

'This excellent book provides the first detailed account of the Europeanization of British politics, and the profound and often unforeseen implications for both policy and the policy process. It is a must read for those who want to understand the continuing impact of the EU on British politics.' - Professor Martin Smith, University of Sheffield, Sheffield 'Europeanization is under-theorized and under-researched. Andrew Jordan has provided a lucid account of British inter-departmental politics which greatly adds to our knowledge of the processes and outcomes of Europeanization.' - Professor Claudio Radaelli, University of Bradford, Bradford 'This fine grained and empirically rich study extends our understanding of British experience within the European Union. It yields insights into European integration way beyond the field of environmental policy.' - Helen Wallace, European University Institute, Florence 'Andrew Jordan's book is a pioneering study of the impact of the European Union on British governance.' - Professor Simon Bulmer, University of Manchester, Manchester 'Andrew Jordan has illuminated the complex processes by which the UK's environmental policymaking became 'Europeanized'. His analysis is sophisticated, nuanced, and based on extensive research. This book is a must for anyone interested in EU or UK environmental policy as well as for those wishing to understand the process of Europeanization which characterizes an integrating Europe.' - Professor Alberta Sbragia, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh 'Jordan's book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in EU and British environmental policies and public policy more generally.' - Environment and Planning 'deserves attention far beyond the narrow environmental policy circle' - American EUSA Review 'scholarly and challenging, this book will be of inestimable value to those studying the policy process, as well as those who require an in-depth analysis of specific pieces of EU environmental legislation' - Journal of Common Market Studies 'a research-rich book which skilfully and lucidly illustrates the extent to which...successive governments failed to engage with [EU] environmental policy' - British Journal of Politics and International Relations
