After reading The Essential James Garner, I felt these two gentlemen truly captured the essence of my father's classic work. Following the established series format, the text opens with a solid introduction to Garner's life and work and then moves on, first, to more detailed treatments of the movies and the television series. The movie sections include plot summaries, brief accountings of how and why the movies were made, reviews of the films' critical reception, and brief analyses. For the television series, including the classics, Maverick and The Rockford Files, the authors provide a look at the series' themes and story arcs as well as episode guides with plot summaries. Author Information

Stephen H. Ryan has an MA in English pedagogy from Salisbury University, where he taught introduction to composition and literature courses. For several years, he was the nonfiction buyer for a national bookstore chain and later the managing editor for a documentary distributor. For more than a decade, Stephen has been a senior acquisitions editor for Rowman & Littlefield where he oversees titles in literary studies, performing arts, and popular culture. Paul J. Ryan is a business management consultant to clients in retail, health care, government (local, state, and federal), and education. He is a mentor to students in the business administration program at Towson University.
