His research and teaching interests lie within the broad domain of human geography. Much of his research concerns telecommunications, particularly the geographies of the internet, including the digital divide, e-government, and internet censorship. He maintains an active interest in political geography, including elections, voting technologies, and the U.S. electoral college. More recently he has studied the geographies of corruption. He has authored, co-authored, or co-edited nine research books, 3 textbooks, three encyclopedias, 65 book chapters, and roughly 110 refereed journal articles.
