OverviewA Gatsbyesque tragic love story set in 17th century Ulster Ireland, during the persecution of Irish Catholics and land appropriations in the wake of the Cromwellian conquest. It tells the tale of the ""Planters"", the Protestant settlers that see Ireland as their ""Emerald Dream"", and how Liam Ó Néill had lost everything to the English invaders. Áine Ní Dhomhnaill promised to marry him when he returned from fighting in the Confederate Wars. When he returns, he finds that she has married a wealthy Cromwellian Colonel, and lives in his mansion. Liam becomes obsessed. He embarks on a ruthless and deceitful collaboration with the Cromwellian regime to fraudulently acquire land and wealth, throwing decadent parties, in a hope of impressing Áine and winning back her affection. Áine initially longs to escape her loveless marriage to be with Liam. But when Liam's deceitful betrayal of his own people is exposed during a sword duel with the Colonel on Bann Bridge the villagers rebel with the assistance of Áine.
