Olgerts Puravs was born October 8, 1934 in Riga, Latvia; leaving there with his parents in 1944 a few days after his 10th birthday. They lived in Germany through the last year of the war and as displaced persons until 1950. They then came to the United States, moving to Saginaw, MI. He graduated from Saginaw High School in 1953. He came to the University of Michigan where in 1957 he received his B.S. in physics, then went to work for a few years as a civilian physicist for the U.S. Navy in their sound lab in New London Conn. Returning to Ann Arbor in 1962 he earned a doctorate in English, becoming a professor of English at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and in the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. He began writing spy novels while living in Charleston. Returning to the Ann Arbor area again in 1979 he became the technical writer for Balance Technology Industries. He retired from BTI in 2001 and spent his free time traveling out west - a mule trip down the Grand Canyon being one of his favorite trips. He also made two return trips to his birth country with his own family, including one with his mother.
