Overview

"Roberto Benigni, the Italian comedian, actor, director and writer gained overnight fame when his film ""La Vita Bella/Life is Beautiful"" won three Oscars in 1999. This study introduces Benigni's performances in film, stage and television, little known outside Italy, with an emphasis on the cultural and intellectual backdrops that characterize his films including his origins among the Tuscan rhyming poets and his experiences in the Roman Avant-garde theatre. Benigni granted the author a series of in-depth interviews and these provide insights into his life and feature accounts of his experiences and apprenticeships with cinema notables such as Cesare Zavattini and Frederico Fellini."
