OverviewWhat can we know? This is the problem of epistemology in theological paradigms. We are not required to have all of the answers (1 Corinthians 12:12), but we are required to be able to give reasons for the Hope that we have (1 Peter 3:15). Concepts of God can be expressed in terms of existence (theism) or nonexistence (atheism). The emergence of the Newtonian worldview led to further depersonalization of the divine as theologians began to stress God's role as Creator and Sustainer over His role as Redeemer. The High Calvinism of the eighteenth century, with its emphasis on God's eternal decrees in the drama of salvation, is a classic expression of this tendency toward the depersonalization of the Divine.
