Overview

Excerpt from The Deep Boring at Spur In the northwest part of the State, east of the Pecos, the formations lie nearly horizontal. This structure prevails over the entire Plains, extending from the north end of the Panhandle to a line joining San Angelo and Pecos on the south. This area measures 330 miles from north to south and 170 miles from east to west. The deeper lying rocks can hence be known here only from inferences based on their appearance in distant outcrops outside of this area and from such local observations as may be obtained from deep explor ations. It is singularly fortunate for our knowledge of the stratigraphy of this part of the continent that a deep boring was made at a point not far from the central part of the area defined. The exploration enables us to know by actual observation what strata underlie. It will enable us to say with greater accuracy what other borings will pene trate even at considerable distances from this exploration. It furnishes firsthand information on the stratigraphy of this part of the State. While this paper describes the section of a single boring, it really gives the only facts so far known concerning the deep stratigraphy of a region cover ing one-fifth of the area of this State.
