Of all the world's great religious symbols, the Cross is the most widespread and the most enduring. This beautiful book celebrates it in all its countless varieties, as perhaps it has never been celebrated before. John Julius Norwich, Chairman of Venice in Peril (1971-2000), Chairman of Serenissima Travel (1972-1987) The Cross has been an inspiration to millions for over two thousand years and continues to be so today. This book by Serena Fass explores some of the many ways in which the Cross has been seen and recorded. When times are good, or bad, the symbol of the Cross guides us and gives us hope. The one thing that unites us, under which we can all stand, is surely the Sign of the Cross. Field Marshal the Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank, President of the Army Benevolent Fund This is a wonderful book. These images, gathered in one place, are an unique experience for the believer and non-believer alike. They are extraordinary artistic representations of great beauty from all over the world. Serena Fass's passion to follow her path is palpable as you turn the pages. David Verey, Chairman of the Tate Gallery Trustees (1998-2004), Chairman of the Art Fund (2004- ) reviewed by The Catholic Herald, The Spectator, The Methodist Recorder and The Tablet

Author Information

Serena Fass began taking photographs when she was seven and has continued all her life: in Europe as a teenager, then in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran and India before she started her travel company Serenissima in 1972, of which John Julius Norwich was Chairman. Serena was soon on her way to Peru, Mexico, Egypt, Ethiopia, Syria, Israel, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Burma, Indonesia, China, Japan and Australia, always with her camera, as she did reconnaissance or led tours for Serenissima. In 1974 she compiled a book of meditations and images, Faces of India, to raise money for Mother Teresa of Calcutta. This winning formula gave her the idea of doing the same thing with her many images of crosses. The result has eventually crystallised into this book which she has taken fourteen years to complete, adding meditations from some of her favourite saints, poets and many of her friends. Meanwhile she has continued to lead tours for both Noble Caledonia and TransIndus Travel in addition to lecturing on Swan Hellenic & Saga cruises. Serena has given nine illustrated fund raising lectures at the Royal Geographic Society, as well as to the Friends of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Nehru Centre in London. She continues to travel widely.
