Overview

For the first time in audio publishing history, all of Shakespeare's plays are available in one extraordinary, definitive collection. Based on The Complete Pelican Shakespeare, here are all of the master's thirty-eight plays, complete, unabridged, and fully dramatized on CDs with an original score and sound design for each play. A monumental project that spanned five years and cost $3 million, The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare represents the collective vision of four people: Shakespeare scholar Tom Treadwell, film producer Bill Shepherd, BBC director Clive Brill, and composer Dominique Le Gendre. Together they have assembled four hundred of the best actors of the British theater and produced a landmark digital recording with a sophisticated layering of sound that immerses the listener in Shakespeare's world.

Hearing Lear, rather than seeing it, emphasizes the power of Shakespearean language. -- AudioFile on King Lear It may be Shakespeare's shortest play, but it's also his funniest...The Bard was never better. -- AudioFile on The Comedy of Errors Listening to Hamlet again, one is struck by how many of the play's lines have become etched in our collective memory--from the Dane's early soliloquies to his humorous exchange with the grave digger in the final act. It's all here in this recording, of course, and the acting is largely excellent. -- AudioFile on Hamlet

Author Information

William Shakespeare (1564-1616), English poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, is the most widely known author in all of English literature and often considered the greatest. He was an active member of a theater company for at least twenty years, during which time he wrote many great plays. Plays were not prized as literature at the time, and Shakespeare was not widely read until the middle of the eighteenth century, when a great upsurge of interest in his works began that continues today. E. A. Copen lives deep in the deep dark woods outside one of the most haunted cities in Ohio. While working a boring retail job, she entertained herself with stories of the fantastic, some of which became books like Guilty by Association, Death Rites, and Broken Empire. She speaks three languages fluently: English, Latin, and sarcasm. E. A. is currently studying to become proficient in memes. Robert Kiyosaki is best known as the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad--the bestselling personal finance book that has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world manage their finances . An investor, entrepreneur, and educator, his perspectives on money and investing fly in the face of conventional wisdom. In 1994 he sold his business and, through his investments, was able to retire at the age of forty-seven. Eileen Atkins has played many leading roles in the theater, in both classical and contemporary plays. She won the Evening Standard Award as Best Actress for her performance in The Killing of Sister George. She has also appeared on television and in film, including in The Cranford Chronicles, Waking the Dead, David Copperfield, and Gosford Park. Sir John Gielgud (1904-2000) is arguably the greatest Shakespearean actor of the twentieth century and one of the best overall actors of his generation. His theatrical career spanned more than sixty years, beginning with a role in the London production of The Constant Nymph and ending with Sir Sydney Cockerell: The Best of Friends in 1988. His film career spanned more than seventy years and saw him in such roles as the Pope in Elizabeth, Priam in Hamlet, Professor of Sunlight in Gulliver's Travels, and Master of Trinity in Chariots of Fire. Imogen Stubbs made her name on stage with the Royal Shakespearean Company, notably as Desdemona in Othello, but she is probably best known to British audiences as Anna Lee, the private detective heroine on the 1990s TV series by the same name. She later played Sarah Spiller in the whimsical BBC kids series Big Kids. On film she had key roles in Sense and Sensibility and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. She and her former husband, director Sir Trevor Nunn, have two children together. Simon Russell Beale is an award-winning stage actor and recipient of numerous accolades, including the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor and the 2000 Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He is an associate of the National Theatre and the Almeida Theatre in London and an associate artist at the Royal Shakespeare Company. His audiobook narrations have won eight AudioFile Earphones Awards.
