OverviewWhen successful author Gerald Candless dies of a sudden heart attack, the obituaries are respectful. He had been, after all, an admired and popular writer, and his sudden death at his home in Devon was a loss to literature as well as to his family and friends. But then his eldest, adoring daughter Sarah embarks on a memoir of him and soon discovers that her perfect father was not all he appeared to be. That in fact he wasn't Gerald Candless at all. But if he wasn't Gerald Candless, who was he? And what terrible secret had driven him to live a lie for all those years? Table of ContentsReviews'So ingeniously constructed, its truth and falsehoods are so deftly and convincingly interwoven, that its solution ... is as jolting as a flash of lightning' -- The Sunday Times 'Vine's control of plot and pure horripilation ... simultaneously thrills and disquiets. She goes for the imagination as a lesser writer would go for the jugular.' -- Literary Review 'One of the most frightening novels I have ever read ... Gerald Candless, the monster at the heart of the maze, is a marvellous creation.' -- Express on Sunday Author InformationRuth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Babergh, CBE (nee Grasemann; born 17 February 1930), is an English author of thrillers and psychological murder mysteries. Rendell's best-known creation, Chief Inspector Wexford, is the hero of many popular police stories, some of them successfully adapted for TV. But Rendell has also generated a separate brand of crime-fiction that explores deeply into the psychological background of criminals and their victims, many of them mentally afflicted or otherwise socially isolated. This theme is developed further in a third series of novels, written under her pseudonym Barbara Vine. Frances Barber is an Olivier Award-nominated English actress who has appeared in stage and television productions. Frances studied drama at Bangor University, Wales.
