Reviews

The Character of Democracy is a rigorous contribution to the literature on comparative institutions. What is especially valuable about the book is the close tie between empirical patterns and normative concerns of democratic theory. Through extensive literature reviews and comparative analysis on the effects of institutions, this book provides a valuable contribution to the literature on empirical democratic theory. --Shaun Bowler, University of California, Riverside Clucas and Valdini achieve a remarkable balance of accessibility and depth in their institutional analyses. They offer detailed and precise descriptions of the varieties of institutions found in democracies across the world, while simultaneously offering thoughtful and nuanced discussions of the consequences of institutional design. Truly an impressive achievement. --Lisa Baldez, Dartmouth College The Character of Democracy fills an important gap in work on comparative political institutions; it is the kind of book that I have long been waiting for, an impressive synthesis of a lot of very important but also scattered literature. --Jose Aleman, Fordham University The authors make a compelling argument about the relationship between democratic institutions and democratic values. This book has the potential to make important contributions both to democratic theory and the study of political institutions. --Emily Beaulieu, University of Kentucky
