The Briars Believed

Overview

Every silver lining has a cloud.Squeezed out of her summer plans with her friends by the Briars estate's new owners, thirteen-year-old Emily must now care for that little boy from Canada's West-while dealing with her own anxieties. Emily throws herself into the challenge, and her friendship with Jackie blossoms. But when following up on leads in a book, they discover a threat to their home. Emily and Jackie dig in to fix it. Hmmm ... When's a win not a winner? And those pesky Indigenous spirits Emily picked up last winter-they're going wild. Picking up from the end of The Briars Between in July 1919, the story builds on the author's family and Jackson's Point lore. This heartfelt coming-of-age tale, set against the backdrop of a turbulent time in Canadian history, may be enjoyed as a standalone novel. If you love shows like CBC's Anne with an E and the works of Louise Erdrich, you'll feel right at home in this series. ""Readers will enjoy history brought to life with warmth and imagination."" Author Information

Andrew Sibbald was born some four decades after Emily Twillum's story takes place and grew up on the Briars property in Jackson's Point, Ontario. When his family sold the property in 2017, after 140 years of their stewardship, he remained involved in the community. His planned village historical tours were quashed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then that Emily-Andrew's fictional protagonist-visited him and gave him permission to tell her story.Andrew is most inspired when enjoying nature-walking, birding, paddling. He is an active Anglican parishioner, contemplates history, reads a variety of books, and teaches Shotokan karate. He lives in Nova Scotia, Canada, with his wife. There, they are close to their children and their families, which includes two active grandsons and three wonderful dogs.
