She became certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 1987, and was recognized as a Fellow of the International Lactation Consultant Association in 2008. Barbara maintains a private practice in Austin, Texas, and is a member of numerous local, national, and international boards and coalitions to promote breastfeeding. Her research and commentaries have been widely published. An outspoken advocate for the profession of lactation consulting, Barbara also helped found and served as the Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Mothers Milk Bank at Austin. She became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 1985. During her career she has been a lactation consultant for 3 different hospitals, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health in the Division of Maternal, Child and Family Health, the Center for Childhood Obesity Research at The Pennsylvania State University, and maintained a private practice for over 20 years. Kay has a national reputation as a lecturer and author. Since 1971 she has been a La Leche League Leader and is a member of the Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Coalition. She served for six years on the Board of Directors of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
