The Borderlands

Overview

The Borderlands: In this thriller romance, worlds collide when Esme Stalwart learns her husband, Jamie MacPherson, is slated to die on the gallows at the hands of Lord Braco, the 1700s Earl of Fife. Born on the treacherous Borderlands of Scotland, Esme must navigate a world of danger and intrigue. Her husband's father was a laird, his mother a Scottish Traveller. A gypsy. Jamie spent the first ten years with his father. But when his father is brutally murdered, Jamie returns to the world of his mother--a world that has been outlawed by the Scots. If found, the Travellers can be imprisoned or executed. Jamie steals to keep his people alive as they drift from one location to the next. His people survive by fighting for the rich lairds on the Borderlands in skirmishes for territory. That's where he first meets Esme and marries her. But Jamie has made an enemy of William Duff, Lord Braco, who wants nothing more than to see Jamie hanged. Esme knows he's in danger. In a race against time, she reaches across the centuries to her descendant, Destiny Kismet, in a plea to save her beloved Jamie. Destiny Kismet and her daughter, Cassidy, are geocaching in Northwest Oregon. That's when they come across a most unusual request from a woman who claims to be their ancestor. In the letter, Esme begs them to come to Scotland, to help Jamie's reincarnated self, librarian Benjamin Campbell, whose life mirrors that of his forebear. Destiny has no intention of traipsing off to Scotland on a wild quest, but her daughter, who has lost her government job, will--with or without her. Eventually, Destiny succumbs to Esme's plea, and she and her daughter travel to Scotland. They have no idea the intrigue and danger they've placed themselves in by crossing the great divide. But changes back home, where democracy seems on the verge of collapse, propels them onward. However, trouble soon finds them, when Destiny's husband--a federal employee--and Benjamin, collude as part of the Resistance to fight the tyranny taking place back home. In steps FBI agent Frank Abernathy, code named Cobra. He is determined to rout out those in the Resistance, but he is embroiled in a fight of his own to save his job and those around him who are being ousted by the draconian new regime. Destiny and her family must be extremely cautious or history will repeat itself, and this time, it may just ensnare them in a web as old as time.

Reviews

Carol Craig has written a beautiful historical romance that brings sunshine to a dreary Highland day. LS I loved The Borderland. This intriguing novel drew me in from the first chapter. The characters were engaging and the storyline riveting. I couldn't put this romantic thriller down until the final page, which means a lot of lost sleep, but it was worth every minute!
