OverviewRenowned as one of the great fighting regiments of the British Army, the Black Watch were formed at Aberfeldy in Perthshire in the early eighteenth century as an independent security force, or watch , to guard the approaches to the lawless areas of the Scottish Highlands, but they soon occupied a distinguished place in the ranks of the British Army. From the Napoleonic Wars to the Boer War, the regiment has served with great distinction in all the major conflicts fought by the British Army. During the First and Second World Wars, it grew in size to accommodate the huge numbers of volunteers from its traditional recruiting areas of Fife, Angus and Perthshire. In more recent times, the Black Watch served with distinction in the Korean War, and in a highly controversial move, it served under the operational control of the US Army during the counter-insurgency war in Iraq in December 2004. Based largely on the letters and diaries of former Black Watch soldiers, many of them previously unseen, this new account of a famous regiment is a fitting memorial to its long and distinguished history.
