Overview

"In 1869, at the age of twenty-four, Friedrich Nietzsche was appointed a professor of classical philology at the University of Basel, a remarkable position for one of his age. The Birth of Tragedy, published in 1872, was his first significant publication. It did little, however, to help his reputation as a scholar; his views were controversial and aroused strong criticism in some quarters. Nietzsche later reissued The Birth of Tragedy in 1886 under the title The Birth of Tragedy, or Hellenism and Pessimism, introducing it with ""An Attempt at a Self-Criticism."" This audiobook includes this preface."

Author Information

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a nineteenth-century German-born philosopher and classical philologist. He wrote critical texts on religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy, and science, using a distinctive German language style. In 1889 he exhibited symptoms of insanity and lived his remaining years in the care of his mother and sister. His ideas exercised a major influence on several prominent European philosophers, including Martin Heidegger, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Duncan Steen, a.k.a. Jinananda, is the author of The Middle Way, Meditating, and Warrior of Peace. Ordained into the Western Buddhist Order in 1986, he is chairman of the West London Buddhist Centre, where he teaches meditation and Buddhism.
