Overview

About 13 percent of Americans are sixty-five or older, according to the most recent census. As baby boomers continue to age, retirement communities and senior living centers will need to expand to meet their needs. Today's modern seniors are looking for social events and challenging educational opportunities close to home. The Beginner's Book of Senior Activities provides dozens of ideas for entertainment, themed parties, low-key gatherings, and scripture-based activities to help event coordinators and ministers plan exciting, diverse programs. The book is well organized, with three event suggestions per month. A detailed description, decorating ideas, recommended Bible readings, jokes, games, video clip options, and more accompany each activity idea. A handy appendix includes 116 pages of ready-to-copy word games, trivia quizzes, crossword puzzles, and other handouts. In addition to providing specific activity ideas, the book provides step-by-step instructions for setting up a recreational program tailored to your group's needs and interests. Also included is a lengthy list of volunteer opportunities that can keep seniors active and engaged in their communities. This easy-to-use, faith-based guide will be indispensable for anyone responsible for planning enriching social events for nursing homes, retirement communities, church groups for older adults, and senior day care centers.

Lisa and I share several similarities: we both love the Lord and we feel privileged and honored whenever we can bring hope to the hopeless. We're both creative and love thinking outside the box, and of course, we appreciate a good joke. Anyone who ministers to the same group of people week after week knows how easy it is to begin running out of ideas and things go flat. Lisa has provided a wonderful resource full of hundreds of creative ideas. Even though this book is targeted primarily to the over-50 age group, there are such fantastic ice breakers, humor, and teachings that I think anyone in creative ministry, regardless of the age one teaches, will find this book an invaluable tool. Enjoy! Chaplain Bart Larson Author, Hope in the Dark: A Positive Look at Life on the Edge of Eternity; co-author with Josh McDowell. Jesus: A Biblical Defense of His Deity

After 19 years of planning and executing activities in a retirement community, I can only ask myself, Where was this resource when I needed it? Lisa tells us everything we need to know-how to get started, how to make it interesting, and how to keep it going for years. She has done all the work, planning each event completely and providing us all the details to have a successful and fun party. I love the printable hand-outs.
