For the past four decades, these images have been selected by JAMA senior contributing editor Dr. M. M. Therese Southgate, MD, has been a member of the editorial staff of The Journal of the American Medical Association since 1962, serving as Senior Editor, Deputy Editor, and, most recently, as Senior Contributing Editor. She has been selecting the front covers of JAMA since 1974 and writing the essays since 1989.
