OverviewThe art of feeding your dog. Can my dog eat this? Can my dog eat that? Inside this book I explain how and why these simple, wholesome foods-many of which are likely already in your kitchen-can significantly benefit your dog's health and overall well-being. All the foods mentioned in this book are healthy for dogs when given in moderation. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily diet. If you prepare your dog's meals at home, the ingredients listed here are excellent choices. However as my research has shown me, animal and/or fish protein should make up 80-90% of your dog's daily intake. Variety is the key to a balanced diet. Dogs are omnivores, meaning they are designed to eat both meat and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Providing a wide range of wholesome foods is the key to a balanced, nutritious diet. Dogs were domesticated from gray wolves over 12,000 years ago. Wolves are true carnivores and eat only the meat from their prey. But since dogs have lived with humans for so long, their bodies have changed in some very significant ways-especially when it comes to digestion. One of the biggest differences between dogs and wolves is that dogs make a special enzyme in their pancreas called amylase. Wolves don't make it at all. Amylase helps dogs digest carbohydrates, like the ones found in fruits and vegetables. This means dogs are no longer strict meat-eaters. They do best on a balanced diet that includes animal protein along with some healthy plant foods.
