Overview

1884 North Devon, England When carpenter, Fred Carter, finds a young woman in dire straits by the roadside, he takes her to the local inn where she gives birth to a daughter. Charlotte Mackie is an unmarried mother and has run away from home where she would have no sympathy from her strict parents. A few days later, Fred takes Charlotte to her aunt's house and does not expect to see her again. When their paths unexpectedly cross, Fred finds Charlotte is distraught as her aunt has arranged an adoption behind her back. Charlotte is desperate to find her baby, and Fred promises to help. However, they are unprepared for the sinister discoveries that lay before them. Set alongside the absorbing detail of country life and budding village romances, dark forces are at work, which ultimately test the bravery and resourcefulness of the whole community.

I couldn't wait to start this book and I wasn't disappointed! The story carried on from the first book and just flowed. I loved all the characters especially Sabina and Sam. I'm looking forward to more stories from Hartford Manor! If you liked Upstairs Downstairs and Catherine Cookson's books, you'll love this one! I would definitely recommend this book and I'll definitely be looking out for Marcia Clayton's books. What a lovely story! I enjoyed 'The Angel Maker very much, and enjoyed learning about the ways of country folk in the 19th century. What a hard life people had. Marcia Clayton has a knack of getting into her character's minds and bringing them to life. I would recommend both of her books to anyone who loves a good story with wonderful characters and a good knowledge of the times. Once again, thank you, Marcia. Carried on lovely from the first one. Enjoyed all of the characters. I was born and live in North Devon so recognised the surroundings. I hope there will be book 3 to carry on the story. Did not want the book to finish. More please... Well worth five stars, thoroughly enjoyed, I would strongly recommend this book to any lover of local North Devon history. A truly addictive read. Cannot wait for the sequel. How did Annie continue her life as a lady? Was she ever accepted by Robert's family? Having thoroughly enjoyed The Mazzard Tree, I was ready for a return visit to Hartford to find out what happened next. The Angel Maker continues Annie and Robert's story beautifully, but there is more. Alongside the absorbing detail of country life and the budding village romances, dark forces are at work which ultimately test the bravery and resourcefulness of the community. I can certainly recommend The Angel Maker to anyone who wishes to pull up a stool at The Red Lion ready for a cosy pint and a cracking good tale!

An enthralling story following the lives of characters who are skilfully crafted to show how individuals can be affected by seemingly trivial events. I enjoyed following characters from The Mazzard Tree because I wanted to learn more about Annie and Robert. This is a real family saga and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series Excellent read! What a lovely story! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this second instalment in the Hartford Manor series. The life, romance, and antics of so many interesting characters kept me turning the pages for more. With all the tension of living with in-laws that despise her, I was happy that Annie found a doting auntie. The author portrays a wonderful feel for the era and the sense of community that kept the common folks going through challenging times. I tried to guess the meaning of the title as I read. Wow! I didn't see that coming! Cheers to Marcia Clayborn for another lovely story. I'll be watching for book #3. Marcia Clayton writes historical fiction with a sprinkling of romance and mystery in a heart-warming family saga that stretches from the Regency period through to Victorian times.A farmer's daughter, Marcia was born in North Devon, a rural and picturesque area in the far South West of England. When she left school at sixteen, Marcia worked in a bank for several years until she married her husband, Bryan, and then stayed at home for a few years to care for her three sons, Stuart, Paul and David. As the children grew older, Marcia enrolled on a secretarial course which led to an administrative post at the local college. There, she seized the opportunity to obtain more qualifications, including two Management Diplomas and two A levels, one in History and the other in English Language and Literature. Marcia progressed through various jobs at the college and, when working as a Transport Project Co-ordinator, was invited to 10 Downing Street to meet Tony Blair, the then Prime Minister. Marcia later worked for the local authority as the Education Transport Manager for Devon County Council and remained there for nine years until her retirement.Now a grandmother, Marcia enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She's a keen researcher of family history, and this hobby inspired some of the characters in her books. A keen gardener, Marcia grows many of her own vegetables. She is also an avid reader and enjoys historical fiction, romance, and crime books.Marcia has written six books in the historical family saga, ""The Hartford Manor Series"".
