A few days later, Fred takes Charlotte to her aunt's house and does not expect to see her again. When their paths unexpectedly cross, Fred finds Charlotte is distraught as her aunt has arranged an adoption behind her back. Charlotte is desperate to find her baby, and Fred promises to help. Loved it! I couldn't wait to start this book; I wasn't disappointed! The story carried on from the first book and just flowed, I loved all the characters, especially Sabina and Sam, and I'm looking forward to more stories from Hartford Manor! If you liked Upstairs Downstairs and Catherine Cookson's books you'll love this one! I recommend this book and I'll be looking out for Marcia Clayton's books. An enthralling story following the lives of characters who are skillfully crafted to show how individuals can be affected by seemingly trivial events. I enjoyed following characters from The Mazzard Tree because I wanted to learn more about Annie and Robert. This is a real family saga and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series Excellent read! What a lovely story! I enjoyed The Angel Maker very much and enjoyed learning about the ways of country folk in the 19th century. What a hard life people had. Marcia Clayton has a knack for getting into her character's minds and bringing them to life. I would recommend both of her books to anyone who loves a story with wonderful characters and a good knowledge of the times. A lovely read Well worth five stars, thoroughly enjoyed, I would strongly recommend this book to any lover of local North Devon history. Find a cozy space and put on the tea kettle! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this second instalment in the Hartford Manor series. The life, romance, and antics of so many interesting characters kept me turning the pages for more. With all the tension of living with in-laws that despise her, I was happy that Annie found a doting auntie. The author portrays a wonderful feel for the era and the sense of community that kept the common folks going through challenging times. I tried to guess the meaning of the title as I read. Wow! I didn't see that coming! Cheers to Marcia Clayborn for another lovely story. I'll be watching out for book 3. A welcome return to Hartford Having thoroughly enjoyed The Mazzard Tree, I was ready for a return visit to Hartford to find out what happened next. The Angel Maker continues Annie and Robert's story beautifully but there is more. Alongside the absorbing detail of country life and the budding village romances, dark forces are at work which ultimately test the bravery and resourcefulness of the community. I recommend The Angel Maker to anyone who wishes to pull up a stool at The Red Lion ready for a cosy pint and a cracking good tale! A wonderful family saga The saga continues in this, the 2nd novel of the Hartford Manor series and a particularly dark story emerges as it progresses. Like the first, this is a gripping story following the lives of several characters and introducing new ones. The divide between the rich and poor, the privileged and those not so, is further explored as Robert Fellwood marries Annie Carter, and so the snobbery of the age it is set in, the 1880s, carries on. There is much to recommend in this book, the author's obvious knowledge of the times comes across sharply, as does the place and setting in North Devon, and the story unfolds seamlessly as the author easily gets into the minds of those she writes about. I am interested to see how book three develops the storyline further. What a beautiful book - a real rags-to-riches story. The only part that made me shiver is what happened to some of the babies. I can't say more - but the title of this novel is not about an angel by any means!
