Overview

"First published over two decades ago as the only multi-authored, comprehensive textbook in the field, the Fifth Edition of this tremendously successful volume expands its focus on the neurosciences to encompass the great strides we've made in the basic sciences and their integration into clinical practice. Since the publication of the Fourth Edition of this Textbook six years ago, we have continued to witness explosive growth in our knowledge base in structural and functional brain imaging, electrophysiology and electrodiagnosis, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, and neuropsychopharmacology -- to name just a few. To convey this intensified focus in neurosciences and to acknowledge the recognition by the American Neuropsychiatric Association and by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties of new subspecialty status in neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology, the editors have added ""Behavioral Neurosciences"" to the title of this seminal work, while increasing its already impressive clinical utility and practicality. Among the many highlights of the Fifth Edition are: • An extensively updated chapter on the cellular and molecular biology of the neuron• An expanded chapter on the epidemiology and genetics of neuropsychiatric disorders• An extensively revised and expanded chapter on the neuropsychiatric aspects of delirium• A comprehensive revision and expansion of the chapter on clinical and functional neuroimaging In compiling this informative and enjoyable compendium, the editors have crafted each chapter as a complete stand-alone entity, so that clinicians can easily apply the content to the day to day challenges of their practices. In this volume's five main sections, you'll find basic principles of neuroscience (cellular and molecular biology of the neuron; functional neuroanatomy; and nervous, endocrine, and immune system interactions), assessment (bedside neuropsychiatry, electrodiagnostic techniques, neuropsychological evaluation, and clinical and functional brain imaging), symptomatologies (delirium, aphasia, aggression and impulse control disorders, and memory dysfunctions and amnesia), neuropsychiatric disorders (traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, sleep disorders, cerebrovascular disorders, brain tumors, human immunodeficiency and viral disorders, endocrine disorders, poisons and toxins, alcoholism and other chemical dependencies, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, schizophrenia, mood and affective disorders, and anxiety disorders) and neuropsychiatric treatments (intracellular and intercellular principles; pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and cognitive-behavior therapy). With a remarkable 82 contributors, 29 of whom are new to this Edition -- all recognized experts -- this comprehensive text is clinically relevant and eminently practical for medical students and residents, psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists and neuropsychologists, and a broad range of professionals who work in many different clinical settings (e.g., the general hospital setting, physical medicine/rehabilitation hospitals, psychiatric institutes, community mental health centers, alcohol and chemical dependency programs, and outpatient services and doctors' offices). Additionally, this Edition has added many tables and clinical summaries designed to be helpful for students and professionals at all levels in studying for certification and recertification examinations in psychiatry, neurology and the behavioral neurosciences. The accompanying CD in PowerPoint presentation format contains a wealth of material to enhance classroom presentation, study, and clinical use. It includes all 170 tables and all 250 figures, many in color, with their explanatory legends, easy to access and organized chapter by chapter with context provided -- plus, Highlights for the Clinician summarizing the key clinical points for each chapter; locator menus; useful links; and a topic outline."

Reviews

The fifth edition of textbook of neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurosciences has an impressive list of contributors writing on a broad array of topics ranging from basic principles in neuroscience to neuropsychiatric treatments. The format of the test is particularly well done with extensive figures, guidelines, and references. The supplementary across disciplines as well as text has wide application across disciplines as well as level of education and training. Although the text is sophisticated, it is also written in a style suited for medical students, graduate students, and residents in neuropsychology, psychiatry, and neurology. & mdash; Stephen N. Macciocchi, Ph.D., ABPP, PSYCHOLOGY PRESS, JULY, 2008

The format of the test is particularly well done with extensive figures, guidelines, and references. The supplementary CD-ROM is a bounce. This text has wide application across disciplines as well as level of education and training. Although the text is sophisticated, it is also written in a style suited for medical students, graduate students, and residents in neuropsychology, psychiatry, and neurology. -- Applied neuropsychology , July 2008
