Overview

Family relationships change dramatically when one or more members stops drinking. Far from offering a quick fix to family problems, in fact, the first years of sobriety are often marked by continuing tension that fuels marital stress, acting-out kids, and difficulties at work. This book explores the process of recovery from addiction as it affects the entire family, presenting an innovative model for understanding and treating families navigating this difficult period. The authors draw upon extensive clinical and research experience to demonstrate how families can be helped to regroup after abstinence, weather periods of emotional upheaval, and find their way to establishing a more stable, yet flexible, family system.

Author Information

Stephanie Brown, PhD, a licensed psychologist with more than thirty-five years of clinical experience, is also a teacher, a researcher, and a consultant in the field of addiction. An internationally recognized expert on the trauma and treatment of alcoholics, all addicts, and their families, she is especially known for her pioneering work in the theory and treatment of adult children of alcoholics. She is the author of a number of books on the subject of addiction, lectures widely, maintains a private practice, and directs the Addictions Institute, an outpatient clinic in Menlo Park, California. Celeste Oliva is an accomplished actor of both stage and screen. She credits her longevity in the acting field to her early years in radio. It was her voice that allowed her to start doing radio shows and branch into acting and land gigs almost out of college. Now she regularly appears on stage and screen. Some of her favorite projects include Olive Kitteridge, November Criminals, Gone Baby Gone, 21, and The Women. On stage Celeste has received nominations and awards for Grounded, Chinglish, Stage Kiss, and Arcadia. She has been a cast member of America's longest continuous running hit show Shear Madness in Boston, and reprised her role in the off-Broadway production last summer. She is also a writer, director, and voice-over artist. Virginia Lewis, PhD, a licensed psychologist, educational psychologist, and marriage, family, and child counselor, is codirector of the Family Recovery Project and senior research fellow at the Mental Research Institute.
