Overview

"How does a straight soldier come home from a tour of duty in Iceland with The Works of Oscar Wilde as his cherished souvenir? The answer is the story of Michael Lenihan, an orphan with an eighth-grade education who spent the Great Depression on the bum, and Jay Gold, an art student from Chicago who takes a special interest in Michael and introduces him to the world of art and literature before going off to England and Normandy. Their friendship illustrates the Wildean aphorism from The Picture of Dorian Gray, ""To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim."""

Author Information

Terry Gordon Colbert was born and raised in Galesburg, Illinois, and lives in San Francisco with his partner James W. Mason, with whom he came out in 1977. Colbert's previous publications include two novels from FriesenPress, Concerto for Two Boys and a Dog (2020) and On Time (2023), and a chapter in the book on long-lasting gay partnerships edited by Merle James Yost, When Love Lasts Forever (The Pilgrim Press, 1999). The Aim of Art was originally published in 2011 by Weavers Press in San Francisco. This corrected edition eliminates a few lingering typos and a couple of extraneous adjectives. Otherwise, it is the same.
