Part of the Collective Biographies series, this book profiles noted young adult authors in eight- to ten-page sketches that are easy to read and have a well-designed layout. Every chapter contains two or three black-and-white photos of the ten authors profiled: Judy Blume, Virginia Hamilton, Julius Lester, Lois Lowry, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Katherine Paterson, Gary Paulsen, Gary Soto, R. L. Stine, and Laurence Yep. Although not extensive, these descriptive overviews cover each author's childhood and entree into the world of literature. For some, including Hamilton, Stine, and Lowry, storytelling and books were an integral part of their early lives. For others, such as Soto and Paulsen, books entered their lives when they were teens looking to escape the chaos of home life.
