Overview

Researchers around the world have studied many methods of using passive and active control devices for absorbing vibratory energy. However, passive devices are fixed and cannot be modified based on information of excitation or structural response. Furthermore, active devices, while providing significant reductions in structural motion, typically require large (and often multiply-redundant) power sources, and thereby raise concerns about stability. Semi active devices, such as magnetorheological dampers, can provide significant response reductions comparable to those of active devices but with low power and in a stable manner.
