Overview

This work looks at intracoronary stenting, which has emerged as the most powerful tool in interventional catheter-based therapy since the introduction of balloon angioplasty in 1977. Despite the successes of stent placement, problems exist with restenosis, stent expansion and placement. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) helps to overcome these problems. IVUS can further reduce acute and subacute complications, reduce restenosis rates and improve the cost benefit ration of stent procedures, especially in lesions where a multidevice approach is used.
